The Humber wetlands project

Professor Robert Van de Noort

Professor Van de Noort was the director of the Humber Wetlands Project, which commenced in 1992 and completed its fieldwork in 2000. The project synthesis was published in 2004 as: 'The Humber Wetlands : The Archaeology of a Dynamic Landscape'. The book includes chapters on the environmental history of the region, the prehistoric exploitation of wetlands, the wetland settlements, the use of wetlands as waterways, the phenomenon of deposition of valuables in wet places in the Humber wetlands, the wetland-exploitation in the Roman period and the Middle Ages and the drainage history of the Humber wetlands and its impact on the landscape. The final chapter looks at the current state and the future of the wetlands in the Humber lowlands.
