Research seminar 10 December 2020: 'Bringing Lunar LiDAR Back Down to Earth: Mapping Our Industrial Heritage Through Deep Transfer Learning' with Jane Gallwey (University of Exeter)
-
The recent emergence of national scale LiDAR datasets has created the potential to greatly increase the analysis and recording of cultural heritage sites. However, the time and human resources required to process these datasets presents a great challenge. Artificial intelligence could be used to carry out preliminary screening of vast areas. By utilising a deep convolutional neural network initially trained on Lunar LiDAR datasets and reapplied in an archaeological context high accuracy results have been obtained for mining pit detection in Dartmoor and Yorkshire.
The recording can be found here.
